Social media design: Five tips for your visual content
Let’s face it – social media is the go-to when it comes to modern day advertising, and the importance of creating engaging visual content cannot be understated.
Investing in quality social media designs can be very beneficial for a number of reasons. Posting quality content on a regular basis can generate new leads, increase business revenue and heighten brand awareness.
As a business, you should be using your social platforms as an extension of your website or an extra tool to sell your services. It is very important to keep your social branding consistent and relevant to all current content.
Engaging and strong visual content on social media gives people a reason to follow, like, comment and eventually buy from you. On average, people retain 55% more information when it is paired with an image (Source: Brain Rules), and 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual (Source: Smart Insights), so don’t overlook your visuals when it comes to your social media marketing.
Here are five tips to consider when reviewing your visual content for social media…
Make visuals part of your social media strategy
Great visuals are only as good as the social media marketing strategy that supports them. Research your audience and find out what type of visuals they’d like to see and build these into your strategy. Consider the platforms that your audience are engaged in and adapt your visual strategy accordingly for each channel. Also check what devices your audience uses and if there is a trend size visuals to fit appropriately.
Be careful when adding text to visuals
Text overlay on visuals should always be straightforward with enough contrast between the text and background so it is easy to read. Font type can affect both tone and legibility so choose your type wisely, and don’t use colour combinations that can make legibility more difficult, such as green and red, or yellow and blue.
Add branding where appropriate
Think about the context in which your visual is going to be shared on social media and add branding accordingly. If your Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn avatar is your branding then you don’t need to add branding to every post, but anything pinned on Pinterest has the potential to be repinned, and without a logo on the visual it is not always clear where it came from.
Be mindful of representation and inclusion
Ensure that the images you are using in your social media marketing are reflective of the diversity of your audience. Research your audience and look at your demographics to make sure you factor them into your creative process. It is much easier for someone to imagine themselves using a product or service if they see someone that looks like them featured in marketing imagery. It is also important to consider how you are going to make your social media visuals accessible for members of your audience
Optimise visuals for SEO
Your social media visuals should be optimised for search engine optimisation (SEO) so that your social media marketing is effective in supporting the overall SEO performance of your website as well as being an effective brand awareness tool. This is especially important as the popularity of visual search continues to grow.
